NEC Softball Champs Fight for Brooklyn
As alumni, we are reaching out to the community with a heartfelt request for your support to help us continue our legacy in Brooklyn.
As you may already know, the LIU Brooklyn Softball program has a long-standing tradition of excellence, both on and off the field. For years, we have proudly represented our university and Brooklyn, fostering a sense of community and school spirit. Our team has become a family, bound by shared values, dedication, and a passion for the game.
Unfortunately, the softball teams’ future in Brooklyn is uncertain. Leadership at LIU has failed to complete promised softball fields and is now forcing us to relocate. For the past 4 years, the softball team has spent countless hours traveling to/from fields to practice and are unable to play home games in Brooklyn (the team has been forced to travel to the Post campus which is up to a 3-hour round trip). This greatly impacts the abilities to perform as students and athletes. The players have all committed to the LIU campus in Brooklyn to grow and learn as athletes and scholars. The team has sacrificed since 2019 based on the promises of the university to build them a home field in Brooklyn. The possibility of leaving the beloved borough behind is disheartening for everyone associated with the softball program.
In December a letter was sent to University leadership, including President Cline, regarding the finishing of the field. A month later, and without warning, the program was told that they were moving to Post.
The softball student-athletes have retained a highly regarded Title 9 attorney. A judge has recently granted a temporary restraining order from moving the program to Post which is a victory for now, but there is more to do. We hope you will join us as alumni and friends in our efforts to keep LIU Brooklyn Softball rooted in the place we call home.
UPDATE:
On behalf of the LIU Softball Team and its dedicated alumni, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your generous contributions to our GoFundMe campaign. Your support has been instrumental in helping us navigate the legal challenges and Title IX concerns as we fought to keep the LIU Softball Team rooted in Brooklyn. Your generosity is a beacon of hope for the LIU Softball Team, and it reinforces the power of unity within our community. It demonstrates a commitment to preserving the legacy of LIU Softball and ensuring that future generations of student-athletes can continue to call Brooklyn home.
With sincere appreciation,
The Alumni of the LIU Brooklyn Softball Team
